WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's and women's squash teams returned last week from a successful training trip at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA and the San Francisco Bay Club.

Each team put in significant work on and off the court, enjoying the brilliant West Coast weather. The practice and conditioning tandem schedule each day has set the team up nicely for the second, and most important, half of the season. The trip was also a fantastic opportunity to welcome back players who were abroad and provide time for the teams to enjoy some leisure activities together.

GW faced two tough tests during the week, with matches against Stanford and fellow guest, Bates College. Both programs are very strong and the Colonials were up to the challenge despite missing the top two players on both the men's and women's teams.

Playing short handed, the GW men's team played its first, and only official match, against Bates College. The Colonials fell by a score of 8-1. The GW women also dropped an 8-1 decision to Bates in a highly competitive match.

The men's team rallied later in the week to beat Stanford 5-4, with a huge effort from the entire squad. The women faced an even greater challenge against the No. 6-ranked Cardinal, but fell by a score of 9-0.

The group traveled to downtown San Francisco later in the week to enjoy some rest and relaxation at the Fairmont Hotel before playing a team of local players at the Bay Club on Saturday. GW notched two victories against the locals to cap off a great week. Head Coach Wendy Lawrence and assistant coach Jake Gross are very pleased with their teams' efforts and are optimistic about their chances for the rest of the season.
