NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - George Washington men's squash freshman Nicolas Valderrama was named the Harrow Sports College Squash Association (CSA) Male Player of the Week on Tuesday morning.
The Bogota, Colombia, native, who has played No. 2 for the Colonials in 12 of 13 matches, played an instrumental role in No. 22 GW's upset of No. 19 Bowdoin on Saturday at the Yale Round Robin.
After falling behind by a 2-1 score to Bowdoin's Matthew Cooper, Valderrama dominated the fourth set by an 11-2 margin to set up a decisive fifth set.
The fifth frame was a marathon, with both players trading points until Valderrama held off Cooper for the 11-7, 8-11, 11-13, 11-2, 19-17 victory.
Valderrama ranks second on the team with seven individual victories.
GW will visit No. 15 Drexel on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match.
