GW Swimming Post Fast Times in Senior Meet Against Howard

WASHINGTON -- An all-senior relay team opened the George Washington swim meet Friday night against Howard University, in the final home meet of 2010 at Charles E. Smith Center Natatorium. The GW relay team, Emily Leik, Jennifer Cohn, Cissey Ye, and Katrina Timlin, raced by their HU counterparts, winning by four seconds.
"We have had some really good training sessions since (winter) semester break," said head coach Dan Rhinehart. "The team did very well tonight."
Freshman Niklas Glenesk shaved more time off his time in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:44.95, .13 hundredths of a second off of the time he posted in the URI Invitational a week ago. Stephen Nelson also posted a faster time in the 200-yard freestyle tonight compared to his time in the URI Invitational that featured three other Atlantic 10 schools.
Sophomore Carolyn Mehrtens cut almost five seconds off her time in the 200-yard freestyle putting in a time of 2:02.99 against Howard compared to 2:07.72 in the URI Invitational.
"I won't be surprised to see a lot of season bests in this meet," said Rhinehart. "Their hard work really showed in this meet."
Across the board, the Colonials have cut times in events since the beginning of the season in October. Ye has cut over 20 seconds since GW hosted Georgetown at the Smith Center on Oct. 24 in the 1000-yard freestyle, posting 11:01.06 in Friday evening meet.
The Colonials swim team travel to Navy (Jan. 30) and George Mason (Jan. 31) for back-to-back dual meets before focusing on the 2010 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on Feb. 17-20 in Buffalo, NY.
