WASHINGTON, DC - GW men's and women's swimming team posted strong times against Bucknell Sunday, at Charles E. Smith Center pool in the first of three home meets in the 2010-11 season. The men's squad fell to the Bison 157-100, while the women's squad fell 151.5-105.5.

"The team's effort today was outstanding. They didn't back down," said head coach Dan Rhinehart. "As we go through the season, this meet is a good starting off point because the team knows what they need to go after in every race."

Freshman Caroline Myers, last week's Atlantic 10 Women's Swimmer of the Week, posted another meet where she won four events. Myers won the 200-yard freestyle (1.54.34), the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.80), the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.67) and was the anchor in the 400-yard freestyle (53.29 split of 3:33.43).

The women's 400-yard freestyle was just seconds shy of the GW program record set in 2009 by senior Paola Leor with recent graduates Katrina Timlin, Laura Myers and Jessica Miga (3:31.17).

Leor had a strong day as well, tying for first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.19. She finished second in a tight 100-yard freestyle race with 52.95 and was the lead leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

For the men's team, freshman Spencer Neff posted a first-place time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.70), second in the 100-yard freestyle (10:05.39), and was the lead leg in the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay (49.60 split of 3:24.10).

 

 

Sophomore Phillip Graeter helped the men's squad in the second-place 200-yard medley relay (27.92 split of 1:38.83), as well as placing second in the 200-yard IM (1:56.88), third in the 220-yard butterfly (1:56.93) and in the 200-yard breast stroke.

Niklas Glenesk took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.27) and in the 100-yard freestyle (48.69), fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.73) and was the anchor leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

GW is back in the pool Nov. 7 at 1:00 p.m. against Drexel at Charles E. Smith Center pool. The Colonials are looking to defeat the visiting Dragons after falling to them when the two teams met last season in Philadelphia.
