Eight Individual Victories Highlight Men's Swimming's Day at American

WASHINGTON, DC - The men's swimming and diving team were highlighted by eight individual victories in this afternoon's Sessions at American's Reeves Aquatic Center. Juniors David Zenk and Tom Pullen, sophomore Rick Rogers, and freshman Andrew Maguire all captured events on the night. Zenk won four events on the night, sweeping both the 100 and 200-yard distances on both the freestyle and backstroke. The two-sport athlete who also specializes in water polo won the freestyle events in 47.20 and 1:44.11, respectively. The Atlantic 10 Conference record holder in the 200 and 400-yard IMs also swept the backstroke events in 52.34 and 1:53.88, in that order. Pullen earned four top five finishes on the day but took home the crown in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.59. Among his top five finishes was a fourth place effort in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.85. Rogers also placed in the top five in four events but swept the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes in 1:01.65 and 2:15.70, respectively. He also took third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.44) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (57.28). Maguire was the third Colonial to earn four top five finishes on the day however, one was a victory in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.59. He also took second in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.34. GW dominated the competition in the breaststroke events, sweeping the top four in both distances. Rogers won both distances with Pullen, Maguire, and senior Mark DeSimone taking second, third and fourth in the 100-yard in 1:02.26, 1:02.31 and 1:04.16, respectively. Maguire, DeSimone and Pullen took second through fourth in the 200 in 2:15.92, 2:22.48 and 2:22.80, respectively.
Senior Drew Boudreau and a trio of freshman: Konrad Kopczynski, Fred Schneider and Jim Forrest all recorded top five performances. Boudreau finished second the 200-yard IM (4:32.46) and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.58). Kopczynski earned fifth place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles in 50.18 and 1:53.09, respectively. Schneider took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.39) and a tie for second with his teammate, Forrest in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:56.34. The Colonials will host conference rival La Salle on Saturday, November 3 at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center Pool. The diving portion of the meet will start at 11:00 am while the swimming portion will commence at 1:00 pm. |
