WASHINGTON – The George Washington men’s swimming team notched its first dual meet victory of the 2011-12 season in its home-opener with a 141-121 win over visiting Towson on Saturday afternoon at Smith Center pool.

The Colonials captured a commanding 21 top-three finishes in the meet. Junior Phillip Graeter led all swimmers with an impressive four first-place finishes on the day, including swimming the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay team.

Graeter opened the meet with a first-place finish alongside junior Alex Etz, freshman Garrett Cottingham and senior Marshall Seedorff, as the squad captured first place with a time of 1:36.54. Individually, Grater won the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 1:54.98. The standout junior also won the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:54.07 and the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.22 to notch the top time in the Atlantic 10 this season.

Junior Niklas Glenesk nabbed first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.48 to eclipse his top conference time of 1:42.53. He also swam the lead-off leg of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay alongside teammates Etz, junior Luke Quimby and sophomore Niccolo Wilson, that finished five seconds ahead of Towson’s second-place team.


 

 

Sophomore Jake Mortensen and Etz claimed first and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Mortensen clocked in at 52.80 seconds for top honors and Etz followed in third with a time of 54.09. Cottingham and classmate Adam Rabe took home second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Cottingham finishing in 1:00.17 and Rabe in a close third with a time of 1:00.59.

Seedorff and Quimby claimed the top-two spots in the 50-yard freestyle, as Seedorff won with a time of 21.18 seconds and Quimby followed in a close second with a time of 21.79 seconds.

Wilson won the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 52.53 seconds. The sophomore also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best 47.35 seconds, just .04 seconds behind Towson’s first-place finisher. Glenesk followed in a close third place in 47.79 seconds.

GW returns to the pool for the Patriot Invitational at George Mason from Thursday, Nov. 17-Saturday, Nov. 19.
