FAIRFAX, VA - The George Washington men's swimming & diving team placed eighth at the Patriot Invitational this weekend as freshman Andrew Maguire led the way scoring six total points in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.04). Junior Tom Pullen scored 2 points in both the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes in 1:01.83 and 2:15.23, respectively.
The women's team placed sixth out of eight schools this weekend as well. Among the top performers from the weekend for the Colonials were freshman Paola Leor and juniors Ariana Berdini and Lauren Fuchs.
Leor set a new GW record in the 100-yard freestyle touching the wall in 51.75. The performance breaks the previous mark of 52.46, which was set by Bambi Bowman back in 1995. On Friday, Leor won her preliminaries of the 200-yard IM in 2:06.96. The newcomer did not compete in the finals later that night but her time would have placed 2nd in the event.
Berdini clocked a pair of top five finishes in the breaststroke events. The native of Woodstock, GA placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.52 and 5th in the 200-yard in 2:25.17.
Fuchs finished seventh and fourth, respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.27) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.93). She also earned points for the Colonials in both individual medleys with times of 2:12.98 in the 200-yard and 4:42.66 in the 400-yard distance.
Sophomore Katrina Timlin also scored well for GW in the breaststroke events with a sixth place finish in the 100-yard (1:08.19). Timlin also scored two points in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.24.
Junior Emily Leik and freshmen Sarah Beggs and Noelle Miesfeld also earned points for the sixth place Colonials. Leik placed seventh in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:11.02. Miesfeld placed 10th in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.86. Beggs earned a total of 10 points for GW in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.98) and 200-yard backstroke (2:13.40).
The Colonials next meet will be at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in a head-to-head matchup against Old Dominion on Saturday, December 1. The diving portion will start at 11:00 am while the swim session will begin at 1:00 pm.
