GW Men's and Women's Swimming Opens 2013 at Rhode Island Invitational
Colonials to Face A-10 Competition Following One-Month Break
Jan. 10, 2013
KINGSTON, R.I. – Following a month-long break from competition and a winter training trip in Puerto Rico, the George Washington men’s and women’s swimming teams open 2013 action against Atlantic 10 competition at the two-day Rhode Island Invitational.
The URI Invitational will serve as a quad meet for both teams and will be held inside the Rams' Tootell Aquatics Center on Friday and Saturday. The women’s side will compete against conference foes La Salle, Massachusetts and host Rhode Island, while the men’s team will face La Salle and Massachusetts, in addition to URI’s men’s club swimming team.
The Colonials’ last competition in the pool was six weeks ago on Dec. 1, 2012 in Norfolk, Va., when the women’s team fell to host Old Dominion, 198-84, as well as Rutgers, 204-79. Competing in a dual meet with ODU, the men’s side dropped a 144-109 decision to the host Monarchs.
At last season’s URI Invitational, the men finished second out of three teams with a total of 464 points. Niklas Glenesk paced the Colonials with a team-best three first-place finishes and Phillip Graeter posted two. The women’s team finished fourth last season with 314 points, led by Caroline Myers' three victories.
The Rhode Island Invitational will serve as the 2013 opener for each program. It also marks the first time this season that the men’s team will take on a conference opponent, as the women faced league foe Richmond at the Patriot Invitational in November.
Action in Kingston, R.I., is set to begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and continues all day on Saturday.
