Swimming & Diving Set for Crosstown Showdown
Colonials will face American and Georgetown on Saturday
George Washington swimming and diving returns from winter break Saturday, traveling across town to American’s Reeves Aquatic Center to square off against the host Eagles and Georgetown.
The diving competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the swimming starting at 1 p.m.
The Colonials have spent the past week in Miami on their annual winter training trip. They will be in action each of the next three weekends getting prepared for the Atlantic 10 Championships, which will be held Feb. 14-17 in Geneva, Ohio.
LAST TIME OUT: The women last competed Dec. 2, earning a 165-135 win over A-10 power Richmond at Charles E. Smith Center to improve to 5-1 in dual meets this season. (Check out the fall additions to the women’s all-time Top-10 list here.)
The men wrapped the fall Nov. 19 with a third-place finish at the Magnus Cup Invitational from in Cleveland. Gustav Hokfelt (50-back, 100-back), Jake Ortiz (1m diving), Tommi Wolst (100 IM) and Peter Nachtwey (3m diving) posted individual wins at the three-day meet. The defending A-10 champion Colonials went 3-0 in head-to-head competition in the fall. (Check out the fall additions to the men’s all-time Top-10 list here.)
SCOUTING AMERICAN: The Eagles are coming off an appearance at the ECAC Winter Championships from Dec. 1-3, where their women placed sixth and their men finished 10th. The women have a 3-2 dual meet record this season, while the men are 0-5.
GW last faced American as part of a quad-meet in the fall of 2014.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN: The Hoyas finished their fall schedule on Nov. 19 after a strong showing at the Bucknell Invitational. Their men placed second and their women third with Drew Carbone and Molly Fitzpatrick picking up Big East Swimmer of the Week honors afterward.
Georgetown came to Foggy Bottom on Jan. 13, 2017, with GW earning a sweep. The Colonials won 188.5-105.5 on the men’s side and 158-126 on the women’s side.
COMING UP: GW will celebrate Senior Day at Charles E. Smith Center next Saturday, Jan. 20, before an 11 a.m. start against Old Dominion. The Colonials are set to honor 10 seniors – six men and four women – before their final home meet.
