Atherley, Wolst Claim A-10 Weekly Honors

Jan. 16, 2018

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington’s Gemma Atherley and Tommi Wolst have been named Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. The Colonials swept the conference’s top weekly honors thanks to a strong showing in a tri-meet last Saturday against local foes American and Georgetown.

Atherley was unbeaten in three events as the women earned a split against the host Eagles and Hoyas. The sophomore from the Channel Islands set a Reeves Aquatic Center pool record in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:52.38 to win by nearly four seconds.

Atherley also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.01) and teamed with Abigail Fusco, Hannah Kopydlowski and Lynn Zhang to earn a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.45).

Wolst was honored after winning all three of his swims, including a pair of pool-record efforts, to help the men complete a sweep.

Wolst set an individual mark in the 100-yard butterfly by touching in 50.14 seconds. The Cleveland State transfer also swam a leg on GW's record-breaking 200-meter medley relay, combining with Gustav Hokfelt, Emils Pone and Patrick Lersch, to win in 1:33.37. He recorded a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.75 seconds), as well.

It’s the first A-10 weekly honor for both Atherley and Wolst. Atherley is the first GW woman to claim the award since Paola Leor won it on Nov. 8, 2010. Jake Ortiz was the last Colonial to take the men’s award on Jan. 17, 2017.

GW returns to action Saturday for Senior Day at Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The Colonials will welcome Old Dominion for an 11 a.m. start. (The senior recognition ceremony is slated to begin at 10:45 a.m.)
