George Washington Athletics Celebrates Homecoming in Style
Seven Former Student-Athletes Inducted into GW Athletic Hall of Fame; Fans' Top 10 All-Time Men's Basketball Players Announced
Feb. 8, 2014
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted several athletics events during Homecoming on Saturday in Foggy Bottom, highlighted by the induction of the 50th class of the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in the City View Room on campus overlooking the national mall.
GW Athletics officially inducted seven new members into the prestigious club which now numbers 151 members. The Class of 2014 included Mike Brey '82 (men's basketball), Tim Champney '00 (men's swimming), Greg Conden '03 (baseball), Kwame Evans '96 (men's basketball), Cathy Joens '04 (women's basketball), Elana Meyers '07 (softball) and Kimberly Warner '04 (women's soccer).
Meyers - GW softball's first-ever recruit - couldn't attend the ceremony as she's in Sochi, Russia, looking to earn an Olympic medal once again on February 18th and 19th after claiming the bronze in bobsled in the 2010 Games. Brey, the Head Coach at Notre Dame, had a home game and also couldn't attend, but was honored at halftime of GW's thrilling win over VCU earlier this season.
Elsewhere on campus, men's basketball remained perfect at home this season and improved to 19-4 overall with a win over Fordham on Saturday afternoon. During the game, after a fan vote commemorating 100 seasons of GW men's basketball, GW fans' choice of the top 10 players in GW history was revealed.
Out of 100 former men's basketball players identified in a countdown leading up to tip-off of the program's 100th season, fans chose 1956 Associated Press All-American Joe Holup ('56) as the top player in GW men's basketball history. Holup was joined by fellow GW legends Mike Brown, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Shawnta Rogers, Chris Monroe, Yinka Dare, Carl Elliott, Kwame Evans, Bob Tallent and Mike Hall in the top 10 fan vote.
