GW finished fourth at the 2012-13 Atlantic 10 Championships, advancing two spots from a six-place finish the previous season, and snapped three school records while making six trips to the podium. In his 16th year at the helm of the program, Head Coach Dan Rhinehart believes his squad is more than capable of filling the gap left by the eight graduates.
"All of our newcomers have the capability of scoring in multiple events at the A-10 Championships and I expect them to push the upperclassmen throughout the season," Rhinehart said. "They have looked really sharp throughout our first month of the season and they bring a high level of intensity to the program."
Highlighting the returners for the Buff and Blue are sophomore Oliver Keegan - who made three appearances on the podium at his first conference championships and was a part of all three record-setting performances - and junior Garrett Cottingham - who took home third in the 200-yard breaststroke - in addition to junior Adam Rabe and senior Jake Mortensen.
Freshmen Bogdan Balteanu, Ben Fitch, Liam Huffman, Matt McPherson, Ryan O'Malley and Nick Smagula, in addition to junior transfer Goran Koprivnjak, all join the Colonials this year and will be looked at to provide depth in nearly every event. Though the league meet is over four months away, Rhinehart believes the Buff and Blue will remain focused to build upon last year's success.
"This has been a promising first month of practice. Everyone is training really hard and I'm excited about the season," said Rhinehart. "Each swimmer has a role with expectations to be met and they are going to be challenged every day, whether in practice or in a meet. We are in a position to take more scorers to the A-10 Championships this year and I think we are going to surprise the league."
GW kicks off the 2013-14 season with the Potomac Relays at nearby American on Friday, Oct. 4. For the second straight year the Colonials head to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2013-14 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships from February 19-22.
