Jan. 16, 2010
WASHINGTON -- GW men's tennis team opened their spring season at Old Dominion University, Saturday in Norfolk, VA, falling 6-1. Sophomore Richard Blumenfeld won the only singles match for the Colonials, battling back to take the three-set match 6-3, 4-6, (10-7). Junior Chris Kushma falls to 11-3 on the year after dropping his No. 1 singles match 7-5, 6-0. "It's always tough to start out against a strong team like ODU, but it sets the standard for us and makes us stronger as we head into a full schedule starting in February," said head coach Greg Munoz. In doubles action, all three matches went to a tiebreaker for the decision. At No. 2 doubles, Ugur Atalay and Arya Vayghan defeated ODU duo of Diskin and Muzalewsk 9-8(5). GW's nationally ranked No. 29 doubles pair of Atalay and Erik Hannah did not take on ODU as a doubles pair, after going 4-4 in fall tournament play. The Colonials are back in action Friday Feb. 5, at Temple in Philadelphia at 5 p.m. GW then takes on Pennsylvania on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m.
