Men's Tennis Falls to No. 59 Old Dominion, 7-0

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The George Washington men's tennis team was blanked by No. 59 Old Dominion, 7-0, on Friday, Jan. 21, in its spring season opener at the Center Court Racket Club in Newport News. Senior Jake Jopling (Wexford, PA) faced seventh-ranked Izak van der Merwe at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-0.
The Monarchs earned the first point of the match by winning all three doubles contests. Jopling and freshman Elliott Daniels (Hilton Head, SC) faced Nate Grover and van der Merwe, who are ranked 38th nationally, at No. 1, but fell 8-1.
ODU completed the sweep by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Elliott Daniels kept things close at No. 3 against Eidy Igarashi, before bowing out 7-6(7), 7-5.
GW (1-1) returns to the court when it hosts James Madison on Friday, Jan. 28, at 12:30 p.m. at the Montclair Country Club in Montclair, VA.
