GW Men's Tennis Falls to No. 70 Cornell, 6-1, in Season Opener
Colonials Claim Doubles Point, Drop Singles to Big Red
Jan. 27, 2013
The Colonials claimed the doubles point in the Nos. 1 and 2 matches over the Big Red - who are ranked No. 70 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) - but could not secure the singles victories.
"We felt really prepared for today's match and I am proud of how hard the team has worked up to this point," seventh-year head coach Greg Munoz said. "We couldn't seem to overcome our first-match nerve and Cornell made us work for every point."
In doubles action, junior Ulrik Thomsen and senior Alexander van Gils defeated Cornell's Patrick Fiaux and Venkat Iyer, 8-5, in the No. 1 match, and the duo of junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov downed Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen, 8-3, in the second-flight match. The No. 3 doubles pair of sophomore Francisco Dias and junior Viktor Svensson dropped an 8-5 decision to the Big Red's Kyle Berman and Sam Fleck.
Dias - who is ranked No. 76 by the ITA - fell to Cornell's Venkat Iyer in a three-set battle by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Fomin - who owns a No. 96 national ranking - fell to Sam Fleck, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot and van Gils dropped a third-flight match to Alex Sidney, 6-3, 6-3.
In the No. 4 match, Zelenkov fell to Quoc-Daniel Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2. Thomsen was defeated by Jason Luu, 7-5, 7-5, at the No. 5 spot and Svensson fell to Kyle Berman in three sets by scores of 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, in the No. 6 match.
GW returns to action on Friday, Feb. 1 when the squad welcomes East Carolina to the Regency Sport and Health Club. Action in McLean, Va., is slated for 11 a.m.
