GW Men's Tennis Defeats Old Dominion, 4-3, in Season Opener
Jan. 28, 2012 “We played a four-hour match with just six players, which is always tough,” head coach Greg Munoz said. “We earned a tough victory over a team we had never beaten before, and we’re happy to open the season with a win.” Freshman Francisco Dias won a close match over Krzysztof Muzalewski in the No. 1 singles slot. Dias won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-0), then earned a 6-4 victory in the second set. At the No. 2 singles spot, junior Alexander van Gils won a tight contest over Albert Ochagavia. Van Gils dropped the first set, 4-6, before posting a 6-3 win in set two and a 7-6 (8-6) tie-breaker victory in set three. In No. 4 singles action, senior Richard Blumenfeld defeated Alfredo Rodriguez, 6-3, in the first set, but eventually fell, 6-7, 7-5 in the second and third. Sophomore Ulrik Thomsen fell to Carlos Lopez Villa, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 3 singles, and classmate Viktor Svensson dropped a close 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 match to Wesley Barrett in the No. 5 spot.
At No. 6 singles, junior Leonardo Lapentti won a three-set match over Can Cetinel, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in his first dual match with GW. Lapentti and Svensson fought their way back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Lopez Villa and Fahoum Fahoum, 9-7, in No. 3 doubles play. Thomsen and van Gils teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Cetinel and Ochagavia by an 8-4 mark. At the No. 2 spot, Dias and Blumenfeld fell to Muzalewski and Barrett, 8-4.
