WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The George Washington men’s tennis team opened the 2012 season this weekend with a taxing four matches in three days. At the William and Mary Tribe Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, the Colonials fell to Dartmouth, 4-2, William and Mary, 4-1, and Iowa, 4-2.
“We showed amazing heart and fought to the end this weekend,” said head coach Greg Munoz. “A few of the guys have been injured the past couple of days, but once we get healthy I know we’ll get some wins.”
To open action inside McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday morning, freshman Francisco Dias defeated Dartmouth’s Michael Laser in the No. 1 singles spot. Dias won the first set, 7-6, and dropped the second by a close mark of 6-4. Dias bounced back in the third to blank Laser, 6-0, and win the set.
In No. 3 singles, sophomore Ulrik Thomsen defeated Brandon DeBot in straight sets by scores of 7-6, 7-5. Junior Alexander van Gils dropped a close match to Cameron Ghorbani, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 2 singles spot.
The Big Green’s Chris Kipouras defeated senior Richard Blumenfeld, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 4 singles, and play was abandoned in sophomore Viktor Svensson's No. 5 singles match with Chris Ho.
Dartmouth then swept the Colonials in doubles play, 3-0. Dias and Blumenfeld teamed up for No. 2 doubles and ultimately fell to DeBot and Ghorbani, 8-5. Junior
Leonardo Lapentti and Svensson dropped an 8-5 match to Kipouras and Mike Jacobs in the No. 3 spot. Thomsen and van Gils were knotted at 5-5 with Alex de Chatellus and Michael Laser in No. 1 doubles, but action was abandoned once Dartmouth won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.
GW then faced host William and Mary on Saturday afternoon. The Colonials won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, but dropped all their singles matches. After going up 6-0 in the first set, Dias' No. 1 singles match with Anton Andersson was abandoned, and van Gils' No. 2 match with Adrian Vodislav was abandoned.
In No. 2 play, Thomsen fell to Ben Hoogland, 6-1, 6-1, and Svensson dropped a close 7-6, 6-4, match to Robert Pietrucha in No. 4 action. Blumenfeld fell to John Banks in the No. 5 match in three sets by scores of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. The Colonials were forced to retire the No. 6 match.
Thomsen and van Gils teamed up in No. 1 doubles play and took down Andersson and Banks, 8-5. The duo of Dias and Svensson won the No. 2 match over Pietrucha and Ilja Orre, 8-1. GW abandoned the No. 3 match.
In their third and final match on Sunday, GW fell to Big Ten foe Iowa, 4-2. Dias defeated Will Vasos, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 1 singles action, and Svensson beat Mitch Beckert in the No. 4 spot, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Van Gils fell to Jonas Dierckx in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 2 play, and Thomsen dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Matt Hagan in the No. 3 spot. Blumenfeld's match with Tom Mroziewicz was abandoned at 5-6, and the Colonials abandoned the No. 6 match.
At No. 1 doubles, Thomsen and van Gils' match was abandoned. Dias and Svensson fell to Mroziewicz and Vasos, 8-2, in the No. 2 spot. GW abandoned the No. 3 match.
GW returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a 2 p.m. match at Penn.
