Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight
Feb. 10, 2008 WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's tennis team, ranked No. 75 in the country, defeated UNC-Greensboro, 7-0, late Saturday afternoon in a home match at the Regency Sport & Health Club in McLean, VA. It was the third straight win for GW, who improved to 5-3 overall on the season. Despite the final score, the match was tightly contested throughout, as four singles matches required three sets. GW earned the doubles point with a solid effort, taking all three matches, including an 8-5 win from Sam Salyer and Ryan Schlachter in the No. 1 position. In the singles competition, the Colonials again won all of the matches. No. 1 player Mustafa Gencsoy improved his overall record this season to 14-4 with a win, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. From the No. 2 position, freshman Yan Levinski continued his strong play with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win and is now 5-0 this spring. Sam Salyer added a singles win to go along with his doubles victory, taking his match 6-5, 4-6, 6-4, while Erik Hannah and Elliott Daniels notched a singles point each for the Colonials. Freshman Chris Kushma picked up his first collegiate dual-victory as his cruised in the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-0. Head Coach Greg Munoz is pleased as his team begins to round into shape. "Ryan Schlachter and Chris Kushma made a strong showing for their first match after recovering from injury. Hopefully, with them healthy and the return of Ryan Hunter, our team will be back to 100% for our conference showdown next weekend."
George Washington will face-off against three Atlantic 10 Conference opponents next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 15, they host Xavier at 1:00 p.m. and then will welcome Dayton the following day, at 7:00 p.m. Both home matches will be held at the Regency Sport & Health Club in McLean, VA. The Colonials then travel to Philadelphia to play Temple on Sunday, at 2:00 p.m.
