GW Men's Tennis Falls to No. 42 Columbia, 4-2, on Day 1 of ECAC Indoor Championship
Colonials to Play No. 59 Dartmouth in Back Draw on Saturday

ITHACA, N.Y. - The George Washington men's tennis team fell to No. 42 Columbia, 4-2, on Friday in the first round of the ECAC Indoor Championships.
The three-day tournament is held at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center and is comprised of seven Ivy League teams - six of which are nationallyranked - as well as GW. The Colonials were seeded seventh while nationally-ranked Columbia was seeded second.
"This was a tough loss to a great opponent but I am confident that we will keep raising the level of our game," head coach Greg Munoz said. "We showed Columbia we could compete and we look forward to a rematch in two weeks."
GW posted victories in the Nos. 2 and 6 singles matches, and two of the Colonials' three losses to the Lions were in three sets. Competing in the second-flight match, junior Nikita Fomin downed Columbia's Ashok Narayaya, 6-2, 6-4. Classmate Viktor Svensson earned a 6-3, 7-6 (6) tiebreaker victory over Cyril Bucher.
Sophomore Francisco Dias fell to No. 44 Winston Lin, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2, in the first-flight match, and freshman Danil Zelenkov fell to Dragos Ignat in back-to-back tiebreakers, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), in the No. 3 match. At the No. 5 spot junior Ulrik Thomsen dropped a 4-6, 5-7, 6-2, decision to Max Schnur.
Columbia earned the doubles point to open the match with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. The No. 17 pair in the nation, as ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, in Narayaya and Schnur defeated Thomsen and senior Alexander van Gils, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 match Fomin and Zelenkov fell to Bucher and Lin, 8-3.
GW will play No. 59 Dartmouth on Saturday at 8 a.m. after the Big Green fell to No. 64 Princeton, 4-1, on Friday.
