MONTCLAIR, VA - Sophomore Daniel Balke (Portage, MI) pulled out a tough three-set victory at No. 6 singles to clinch a 4-3 win for the George Washington men's tennis team over Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Montclair Country Club. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 5-4 overall on the season after suffering a 5-2 loss to Dayton on Friday, Feb. 18, in their Atlantic 10 opener.

On Saturday, UMBC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches at No. 1 and 2, respectively. The Colonials battled back in singles play as senior Matt Treadgold (Glenmont, NY) made his return to the top spot and downed James Tyler in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) handled Mike Keller at No. 2 in straight sets. GW went on to victory when Balke rallied after dropping the first set (4-6) to close out Lief Hollowell, 6-4, 7-5, for his first dual-match win of the season.

Against the Flyers, GW was led by victories from Treadgold and Gencsoy at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. Treadgold topped Rob Altenau in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2), while Gencsoy was also triumphant in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (5), over Tom Murphy.
