GW Men's Tennis Tops Old Dominion, 5-2
Colonials Win Doubles Point and Four Singles Matches to Rout Monarchs
Feb. 23, 2014
NORFOLK, Va. – The George Washington men’s tennis team earned a 5-2 victory at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
The Colonials (2-4) earned the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead and won four singles matches to secure the road victory.
“Playing a tough schedule makes us a stronger team in the end. We will continue to fight for ranked wins as we emphasize remaining unbeaten against teams outside of the top-75,” said Head Coach Greg Munoz. “We are getting closer to accomplishing our goals and our team is showing great camaraderie in what we knew was going to be a tough season.”
In the second-flight doubles match, senior Nikita Fomin and sophomore Danil Zelenkov defeated Darragh Glavin and Koen Wiggemans, 8-4, and the No. 3 duo of seniors Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen earned an 8-7 (7-5) decision over Zvonimir Podvinski and Dante Terenzio.
Rookie Julius Tverijonas took care of Jonas Kuwert, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 singles, and Fomin rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 3 spot over Terenzio. Zelenkov defeated Glavin, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 5 match and Svensson earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Abdoulaye Camara at No. 6. Senior No. 79 Francisco Dias was edged by No. 44 Carlos Lopez Villa by two points in a 7-6, 6-7 (8-10) tiebreaker.
