CHARLOTTE, N.C. – George Washington men’s tennis rolled to a 4-0 win over No. 70 Charlotte on Friday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex for its second straight victory and first over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
GW (3-4) took a 1-0 lead over its former conference rival with the doubles point, which was highlighted by unseating the 49ers’ (5-3) nationally ranked and previously undefeated No. 2 doubles pair.
The Colonials’ second-flight duo of senior Nikita Fomin and Danil Zelenkov defeated the No. 31 team in the nation in Kamil Khalil and Jordi Massalle Ferrer, 8-6, to hand the duo its first loss of the spring season. The No. 3 team of seniors Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen clinched the point when it downed Paul Cisti and Forrest Edwards, 8-3.
In No. 3 singles play, freshman Julius Tverijonas held Charlotte’s Jack Williams to two games for a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory. Thomsen earned a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Alex Calott in the No. 5 match and Svensson defeated Cisti, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot.
Junior Francisco Dias, the No. 115 singles player, and Fomin were both up one set and led in the second over their opponents in the Nos. 1 and 2 matches, respectively, but they went unfinished after GW secured four points over the 49ers.
The Colonials continue their three-match weekend swing through North Carolina at No. 60 UNC Wilmington on Saturday in a 12 p.m. match at the UNCW Courts.
