No. 50 GW Men's Tennis Blanks Temple to Open Atlantic 10 Play
Colonials Down Owls, 7-0, in First Conference Match of Spring Season
March 2, 2013
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 50 George Washington men’s tennis team used a clean sweep of Temple to open Atlantic 10 action on Saturday at the indoor Legacy of Philadelphia.
The 7-0 win is the first for the Colonials (6-4, 1-0 A-10) as a nationally ranked program this season, as they earned the nod from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) earlier this week.
“You can never ease your play against a team,” head coach Greg Munoz said. “Today we never backed down. We stayed focused throughout the match and played hard.”
GW opened the match with the doubles point before claiming all six singles matches over Temple (2-5, 1-1 A-10) in straight sets. The No. 1 duo of junior Ulrik Thomsen and senior Alexander van Gils defeated the Owls’ Santiago Canete and Kacper Rams, 8-6. Junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov then teamed up to down Nicolas Paulus and Hernan Vasconez in the No. 2 match.
Competing for the first time this spring in the No. 1 slot, Fomin defeated Rams, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 2 match sophomore Francisco Dias – the No. 114 player in the country as ranked by the ITA – held Hichman Belkssir to just two games as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
In third-flight play van Gils downed Canete, 6-4, 6-2, and Thomsen earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Nicolas Paulus at the No. 5 spot. In the No. 6 match junior Viktor Svensson defeated Sam Rundle, 6-2, 6-2.
GW travels to A-10 foe Fordham on Sunday for its third match in as many days. Action between the Colonials and the Rams at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis in Port Chester, N.Y., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
