March 8, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 55th-ranked George Washington men's tennis team extended its road win streak to five matches with a 6-1 decision over Navy at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Competing indoors for the first time in four matches, the Colonials (6-4), picked up their first win since breaking back into the ITA national rankings as the No. 55 program in the nation.
"Navy fought hard today but we felt good and played solid tennis," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "Playing a tough schedule makes us mentally tougher and prepares us to fight in every match. The outdoor season truly begins next week when we head south for our Spring Break trip."
GW opened the match by securing the doubles point at Nos. 1 and 3. The top flight of junior Francisco Dias and freshman Julius Tverijonas rolled over Austin Jones and Thomas Pecor, 8-1, and the senior tandem of Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen extended their unbeaten streak to five matches with an 8-3 win over Alex Gaines and Krishna Jana.
Dias, who is ranked No. 115, then earned a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Calvin Mark at No. 1 singles, while Fomin held Pecor to two games at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Sophomore Danil Zelenkov topped Jones, 6-2, 6-3, in the third flight, Tverijonas earned a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory at No. 4 and Svensson defeated Jana, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 5 spot.
GW opens its three-match Spring Break swing when it heads to No. 62 Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday, March 11. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
