Men's Tennis Upsets No. 38 South Alabama

BOCA RATON, - Fla. - The George Washington men's tennis team upset No. 38 South Alabama, 4-3, to cap a pair of victories on Wednesday during a stretch of four matches in three days during spring break.

The triumph over South Alabama marks the first over a nationally-ranked opponent under first-year head coach David Macpherson.

The Colonials (11-5) began the day with a 7-0 sweep of UConn before outlasting South Alabama, 4-3.

GW started out strong, as junior Chris Reynolds and senior Fernando Sala took a No. 3 doubles win. Freshman William Tutecky and junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou then clinched the early point, taking the second-flight match to give the Colonials a 1-0 advantage.

South Alabama then took the lead, taking the Nos. 5-6 bouts.

Junior Chris Fletcher tied the match at 2-2 with a three-set triumph at the No. 2 spot, coming back from a first-set deficit. The Jaguars then came within one of clinching the match with a No. 4 win.

Junior Chris Reynolds was the next Colonial to complete singles play, rallying back from being down 4-2 in the third set to win in the No. 3 spot.

With the match knotted at 3-3, senior Julius Tverijonas clinched the upset, defeating the nation's No. 82-ranked singles player Tuki Jacobs in three sets to give GW a 4-3 victory.

 

 

In the morning, the Colonials took the early doubles point over UConn before sweeping singles play to take a 7-0 shutout triumph.

Playing in the top three spots respectively, Fletcher, Reynolds and freshman Dennis Afanasev were the first three to finish in straight sets.

Tutecky then won a straight-setter of his own at No. 5 before Sala and junior Jabari Stafford completed the sweep.

The Buff and Blue close spring break play on Thursday at Florida Gulf Coast. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
