Men's Tennis Defeats FGCU on Thursday

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The George Washington men's tennis squad won its third-consecutive match with a 5-2 victory at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday evening.

The Colonials (12-5) won three-of-four matches across three days during a spring break road trip.

GW started off strong as freshman William Tutecky and Christos Hadjigeorgiou claimed a No. 2 doubles victory. The duo of senior Julius Tverijonas and junior Chris Fletcher clinched the early point at No. 1.

Fletcher and Tverijonas continued their dominant play with a triumphs in No. 2 and No. 1 solo slots, respectively, in straight sets to put the Colonials ahead 3-0 in the match.

FGCU stayed alive with a No. 4 win, but junior Chris Reynolds solidified the victory, coming behind from a first-set deficit to take the third-flight match.

FGCU went on to take the No. 5 match in three sets. Freshman Dennis Afanasev closed the night with a three-set win of his own to put the final tally at 5-2 in favor of GW.

The Colonials finish a stretch of seven consecutive matches on the road on April 2 at UNC Wilmington.
