PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University men's tennis team played a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference matches this past weekend in Philadelphia and finished 1-1. GW blanked Temple, 7-0, on Friday, March 18, before dropping a 5-2 decision at Saint Joseph's Saturday evening.
In the Colonials match against the Owls, GW swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest. In singles play, GW won 5-of-6 matches in straight sets to cruise to victory. Freshman Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) dropped the first set in his match at second singles, but rallied for a 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-4 victory.
Against the Hawks, SJU moved ahead 1-0 by winning 2-of-3 doubles matches. Freshman Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) and Gencsoy teamed together at No. 2 to post an 8-3 win over Elao Ziu and Matt Struble to prevent the sweep. Gencsoy and Salyer, meanwhile, recorded the Colonials' lone wins in singles play as well. At second singles, Gencsoy won 6-4, 6-3 over Jimmy Holland, while Salyer posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Antonio Aniello at fourth spot.
GW (6-8) returns to action when it travels to Richmond, VA, on Friday, March 25, to take on the Spiders at 2:30 p.m.
