Men's Tennis Defeats Fordham, 6-1
March 23, 2002
The Colonials men's tennis team showed no signs of rust after a week-long spring break as they defeated Atlantic 10 Conference member Fordham, 6-1, Saturday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. GW improved to 10-6 on spring.
Sophomore Matt Hane (Walterboro, SC/Porter-Gaud School) defeated Forham's Mark Carducci, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and teamed with senior Kinzie Wright (Seminole, FL/Thomas Howard Academy) to win, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Matt Treadgold (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central), playing at No. 2 singles, suffered just his third loss of the season dropping a 6-1, 3-6, 1-6 decision to Fordham's Chris Kelly. Treadgold reaggravated a slight back injury late in the first set that hampered him throughout his singles match. He teamed with Kevin Wright (Seminole, FL/Thomas Howard Academy) to win, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.
Kevin Wright won easily at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 against Fordham's Andrew Salak. "Kevin played the best he has played this spring," GW coach Tom Hawkins said. "Matt Hane was working on being more aggressive on his backhand, something we have been working on all year."
Senior Kinzie Wright (Seminole, FL/Thomas Howard Academy) won a battle at No. 4 singles defeating Fordham's Josh Krieg, 6-2, 6-7 (8), 6-2. Sophomore Brett Warner (Vienna, VA/James Madison) was impressive at No. 5 singles winning, 6-1, 6-1.
Next up for the Colonials is a match with Duquesne this Friday, Mar. 29 at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility beginning at noon.
