Men's Tennis Sweeps Saint Joseph's at Home

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington men's tennis finished 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference action with a decisive 7-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Tuesday at the Mount Vernon Tennis Center. With the win, the Colonials went to 6-0 against A-10 opponents, 12-7 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 3-10, 2-2 in the A-10.
In the four GW seniors last home conference match, the Colonials began by capturing the doubles point over the Hawks. Senior Erik Hannah and Ugur Atalay won 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles, while Christopher Kushma and Viktor Svensson won 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles match for the doubles point.
Erickson and Blumenfeld carried the momentum into their No. 6 and No. 5 singles matches, winning in straight sets.
Hannah, at No. 3 singles, won the first set, 6-2, but his SJU opponent, Tommy Gates battled back to take the second set, 6-3, forcing a third. Hannah won the super tiebreaker 10-6, to complete his regular season career with a 28-0 conference record.
In the No. 1 singles match, senior Yan Levinski downed his opponent Alex Veronis, 7-5, 6-3. Kushma won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 over Jeff Kessler at the No. 2 match.
Svensson also won his No. 4 singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Peter Cognetti.
The Colonials wrap up the home schedule on Sunday, April 3, when they take on the Binghamton Bearcats at 10:00 am at the Mount Vernon Tennis Center.
