No. 53 GW Men's Tennis Downs Fordham, 5-1, in A-10 Opener
Colonials Win Third Straight Match

WASHINGTON - The No. 53 George Washington men's tennis team won its third straight match and opened Atlantic 10 action with a 5-1 win over Fordham on Friday at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus
Competing in their first of three matches this weekend, the Colonials (11-5, 1-0 A-10) opened the contest with singles play and rolled to a 5-1 decision over the Rams (4-11, 1-1 A-10). Doubles matches were not played.
Junior Francisco Dias posted his fifth straight singles victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Matty Najfeld at the No. 1 spot. In second-flight action, senior Nikita Fomin defeated Alastair Barnes, 6-4, 6-4, and sophomore Danil Zelenkov extended his unbeaten streak to 11 matches with a 6-2, 6-2, decision over Kuba Kowalski at No. 3.
Senior Viktor Svensson topped J.J. Tauil, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot and rookie Julius Tverijonas downed Michael Puntillo by scores of 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 5 match. Senior Ulrik Thomsen fell in three sets at the No. 6 spot, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6, to Mischa Koran.
GW returns home on Saturday when the squad welcomes Richmond for a 12 p.m. match.
