MONROEVILLE, PA - No. 2 Xavier defeated No. 3 George Washington, 4-2, in a semifinal match in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship, held at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, PA, early Friday afternoon.
The Musketeers claimed the doubles point to open the semifinal match, winning the first two flights. GW's Brandon Harris/Mark Doumba, playing in the third flight, won 8-5.
In singles play, Xavier junior Brian Schubert defeated GW freshman Maxx Wattenberg in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) at No. 6 singles when an unforced error gave Schubert match point. The Colonials won two of the singles flights, getting victories from No. 1 Mustafa Gencsoy and No. 2 Sam Salyer.
In the other semifinal match, No. 1 Charlotte downed No. 4 St. Bonaventure, 4-0. The top-seeded 49ers will face the Musketeers in the Championship match Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
In the third-place match, George Washington will square off against St. Bonaventure at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
