MONROEVILLE, PA - The George Washington University men's tennis team completed its 2006 spring season on Sunday with a 4-3 loss to No. 3 seed Saint Joseph's in its final match at the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship at Club 4 Life. The Colonials finished eighth at the tournament, having won their first match of the championship, a 4-2 triumph over No. 9 seed Duquesne on Friday.
Following a 4-0 loss to top-seed Charlotte in its second match of the day on Friday, GW was edged, 4-3, by No. 4 St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The loss sent the Colonials to the eighth-place match against the Hawks. In both matches over the weekend, GW won 3-of-6 singles contests, but dropped the doubles point each time.
Sophomores Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) and Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) won all but one of their singles matches at No. 1 and 2, respectively, throughout the three-day tournament. Salyer won all three of his singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Mark Doumba (Bradenton, FL) posted back-to-back victories at fourth singles on Saturday and Sunday, while Gencsoy and Salyer teamed together at first doubles to post a pair of wins. The duo won both their doubles matches by a score of 8-2; Friday against Duquesne and again on Saturday against St. Bonaventure.
