RADFORD, Va. – Competing in its third match in as many days, the No. 67 George Washington men’s tennis team blanked its second straight opponent with a 4-0 win over Radford on Sunday at the Radford University Tennis Complex.
The Colonials (15-5) pushed their win streak to eight with the win over the Highlanders (7-12), marking the most consecutive victories under the direction of seventh-year head coach Greg Munoz.
GW opened the afternoon by winning the doubles point and taking a 1-0 lead. Junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov teamed up for an 8-2 No. 2 victory over Stijn Meulemans and Joe Mills. In the No. 3 match, the No. 90 team of sophomore Francisco Dias and senior Leonardo Lapentti improved to 15-0 this spring with an 8-6 win over Randall Carter and Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe.
In singles action, Dias defeated Nicholas Sayer, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Zelenkov earned a three-set No. 3 victory over Thomas Dehaen, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, and Lapentti nearly held Carter scoreless in a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot.
GW closes the regular season on Tuesday at Atlantic 10 newcomer No. 24 VCU. The battle of the nationally ranked A-10 teams was originally scheduled for March 24 but was postponed due to rain.
