FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The George Washington University men's tennis team opened its 2005 fall campaign at the Mary Washington Tennis Kickoff Classic `05 this past weekend, Sept. 9-10, at UMW's Battleground Outdoor Complex. Sophomore Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) and freshman Mark Lansman (Penn Valley, PA) each went 3-0 in singles play to highlight action for the Colonials.

On Saturday, Gencsoy won both his matches in Flight I in straight sets, taking out Mary Washington's Paul Bristow, 6-0, 6-2, and Liberty's Priit Pihl, 7-6(4), 6-3. Sophomore Elliott Daniels (Hilton Head, SC) went 1-1 on the final day with his victory coming against John James of Mary Washington in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

In Flight V, senior Will Timmons (Greenville, SC) won his only match on Saturday in three sets over UMW's Jason Dunn, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(3). Lansman, meanwhile, posted straight-set victories in both Flight VI and VII to finish undefeated for the weekend.

On Friday, Gencsoy and Daniels both notched three-set victories in their respective singles flights, while Timmons, freshman Mike Campagna (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) and Lansman were also winners in singles play.

In doubles action, Gencsoy and sophomore Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) won both of their matches in Flight I by scores of 8-6 in each contest. Daniels, meanwhile, teamed with Timmons and the pair topped Chris Armes and Austin Koch from UMW, 8-3, to advance in Flight II.

The Colonials return to play when they compete at the DC Metro Tournament, Sept. 22-26, with action being hosted by GW, Georgetown and American.
