Men's Tennis to Participate in DC Metro Tournament this Weekend
GW opened fall play at UVA
Sept. 21, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC -The George Washington men's tennis team began play in its fall season this past weekend, competing in the 2006 UVA Fall Invitational in Charlottesville, VA. The tournament, one of the country's highest rated fall events, featured 21 players from the Preseason ITA Singles Rankings, including 10 who competed in last year's NCAA Singles Championship, and six All-Americans.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. For many of the 22 teams in the competition, their seasons had started weeks prior and most had already participated in other tournaments.
The highlight of the weekend was junior Elliot Daniels winning his first round match over UVA's Leif Sunderland, in impressive fashion, 6-3, 6-3. Daniels had struggled with victories last year, often losing in three sets. Junior captain Sam Salyer had a stellar performance in defeat to Harvard's Gideon Valkin, 3-6, 7-5(7-5), 6-3. It appeared as though stamina became a factor near the end of the match, as Salyer was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set.
Junior Mustafa Gencsoy, GW's #1 player, struggled in his win over UVA freshman Milo Johnson, 7-6, 7-6, before eventually falling to Penn's Justin Fox, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. "I feel as though [Gencsoy] might have been a bit overwhelmed and as a result, had trouble focusing on his goal, which was to win the tournament," said Munoz. Gencsoy was recently accepted into the qualifying of the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships, scheduled to take place October 2-4, in Tulsa, OK.
The UVA Invitational proved to be a great introduction to Division I tennis for two Colonial freshmen, Maxx Wattenberg and Ryan Hunter. "Although they failed to record a win over the weekend," said Munoz, "they both showed signs of maturity and a better understanding of college tennis."
"Overall, it was a successful trip for us."
The George Washington men's tennis team will be participants in another tournament this weekend as they will travel across town to Georgetown for the DC Metro Tournament, played at the McDonough Tennis Complex.
