Sophomore Earns Three-Set Thriller to Move Through Qualifying Singles Draw

TULSA, Okla. – George Washington men’s tennis sophomore Danil Zelenkov earned a three-set comeback victory to advance to Round 2 of the qualifying singles draw on Monday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
The event at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa features the largest field of any collegiate tennis championship, and is comprised of three rounds of competition - pre-qualifying, qualifying and the main draw.
Zelenkov advances to the second round of qualifying singles competition on Tuesday after earning a three-set decision over Manfed Jeske of Arkansas. The Skopje, Macedonia, product dropped the first set to Jeske, 3-6, but powered back for consecutive 6-2, 6-2 set victories to claim the match. He will face the No. 99 player in the nation in Alvaro Nazal of Gonzaga on Tuesday.
Junior Francisco Dias, who owns a No. 94 national singles ranking, fell to No. 67 Harrison Adams of Texas A&M, 6-1, 7-5, in his first round of competition.
Dias and Zelenkov will team up on Tuesday for the second round of the qualifying doubles draw. The tandem received a bye through Round 1 and will face the winner of the Oklahoma State-Memphis match on Tuesday at 12 p.m. (EST).
Competitors who reach the singles quarterfinals, doubles finals and consolation championships will receive automatic bids to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships from Nov. 7 – 10 in Flushing, N.Y.
