GW Men's Tennis Advances to Second Day of ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 1, 2011
TULSA, Okla. - Alexander van Gils, Ulrik Thomsen and Ugur Atalay all defeated their opponents in convincing fashion Saturday at the ITA/D'Novo All-American Men's Tennis Championships to advance to second round play on Sunday. The tournament, held at Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., features the largest field of any collegiate tennis championship with more than 300 players competing. Van Gils kick-started GW's victorious day with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 win over Texas San Antonio's Joel Rubio. Despite a slight blemish in the second set, van Gils rebounded to sweep Rubio in the third. Thomsen was forced to adjust to the left-handed serves from Francis Sargeant from BYU and dropped his first set 2-6. Thomsen then cruised to 6-2, 6-2 victories in the second and third sets. Atalay finished the day with a perfect 6-2, 7-5 win over Texas Tan Antonio's Daniel Moser. "These guys played the way they should play," said head coach Greg Munoz. "It's huge to get the first match under your belt. Everyone is excited for Sunday." The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Oct. 2.
