TULSA, Okla. – The George Washington men’s tennis team continued play at the ITA/D’Novo All-American Men’s Tennis Championships Sunday, held at Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa

Senior Ugur Atalay defeated Texas Christian’s Blake Wiggins 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the final round of the prequalifying portion of the tournament. Atalay then fell to Florida’s Spencer Newman later in the day by scores of 6-3, 6-4.

“When Ugur is offensive, he wins,” said head coach Greg Munoz. “When he is on, he is tough to beat. He struggled to find his serve at times today and that hurt him.”

Sophomore Ulrik Thomsen defeated senior Alexander Haggai from Binghamton by scores of 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4. It was Thomsen’s second win in less than a year over Haggai as he handed him a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 defeat back in April.

But after five long sets on the day, Thomsen then dropped a hard-fought match to Dan Mamalat from Marquette, 7-5, 6-4.

The 16 players that lost today have a chance to be chosen for the six “luck loser” spots.

Freshman Francisco Dias opens play Monday, Oct. 3, in the first qualifier round. Dias will face Purdue’s Diego Acosta, also a freshman who holds an ATP ranking of 1,067, while Dias is ranked No. 954.
