GW Men's Tennis Wraps Run at ITA All-American Championships
Zelenkov Falls in Singles, Edged in Doubles With Dias
Oct. 2, 2013
TULSA, Okla. – George Washington men’s tennis sophomore Danil Zelenkov and junior Francisco Dias concluded play at the ITA All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Zelenkov fell in the third and final round of the qualifying singles draw and he and Dias were edged in qualifying doubles to cap their run at the annual event.
The pair opened the day with doubles action and was edged in a tiebreaker by UTSA’s Diogo Casa and Yannick Junger, 8-7 (3). Looking for his second win over a nationally ranked opponent in as many days and third of fall season, Zelenkov then dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to No. 73 Arturs Kazijevs of SMU.
“Overall we had a successful trip," Head Coach Greg Munoz said. "Danil and Francisco had never played doubles together but they learned a lot about how to compete and came so close to reaching the main draw. Danil keeps improving and he is ready to make that jump into being a top nationally ranked singles player. Francisco also continues to improve and I expect him to do big things this season. I am looking forward to see what they bring to the ITA Regionals in two weeks.”
The Colonials return to the court this weekend when they head to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Fall Classic.
