Sophomore Upsets No. 58 Simpson of LSU to Claim One of 64 Spots in Main Draw Action
Oct. 3, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - George Washington men's tennis sophomore No. 89 Francisco Dias upset No. 58 Chris Simpson of LSU in the final round of qualifying singles on Wednesday to advance to main draw play at the ITA/D'Novo All-American Men's Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The nine-day tournament, which features the largest field of any collegiate tennis championship with more than 300 competitors, is comprised of three rounds of competition - pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw. The singles and doubles qualifying rounds ended on Wednesday and main draw play will begin on Thursday morning.
Vying for one of just 16 available spots in the main draw bracket of 64 competitors, Dias - who is ranked No. 89 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) - upset LSU's Simpson - who is ranked 58th - by set scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7) to advance. The Lisbon, Portugal, native will face No. 26 Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday.
The doubles pair of Dias and senior Alexander van Gils defeated SMU's Arturs Kazijev and Mischa Nowicki, 8-6, to advance to the third and final round, but the duo dropped a hard-fought 9-7 match to Martin Ayala and Diogo Casa of UTSA.
