Men's Tennis Concludes Play at ECAC Invitational Championships

FLUSHING MEADOW, NY - The George Washington University men's tennis team completed competition on Sunday, Oct. 3, at the ECAC Invitational Championships at the United States Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow. Senior Matt Treadgold (Glenmont, NY) managed to finish 1-1 at No. 1 singles as the Colonials dropped all three of their matches over the weekend.

The Colonials, seeded 11th, faced sixth-seeded Columbia in their opening match on Friday, Oct. 1, and fell to the Lions, 7-0. Treadgold and senior Jake Jopling (Wexford, PA) provided the lone bright spot for GW with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Akshay Rao and Scott Robbin.

On Saturday, GW was edged by 14th-seeded Rutgers, 4-3. The Colonials claimed the doubles point as sophomore Gordon Daniels (Hilton Head, SC) and junior Jason Sucoll (Simsbury, CT) defeated Matthew Fawcett and Alex Tervooren, 8-4, while junior Will Timmons (Greenville, SC) and freshman Elliott Daniels (Hilton Head, SC) topoped Robert Baggio and Jonathan Wanono, 8-5, at the No. 3 spot. In singles play, Elliot Daniels came through with a victory at No. 4 over Wanono, 6-3, 6-4, while freshman Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) recorded the third point at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Baggio.

In its final match on Sunday, George Washington fell to 10th-seeded St. John's, 6-1. Treadgold recorded the lone point for the Colonials with a 6-2, 1-0 (DNF, Inj.) triumph at No. 1 singles over Louis Desmateaux. Jopling and Treadgold also teamed at No. 1 doubles and finished tied, 7-7, with Desmateaux and Aurelio Di Zazzo.

 

 

The Colonials return to action when they host Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Montclair Country Club in Montclair, VA.
