TULSA, Okla. - George Washington men's tennis sophomore No. 89 Francisco Dias dropped a tough three-set heartbreaker to No. 26 Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt in Round 1 of main draw singles action on Thursday at the ITA/D’Novo All-American Men’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Dias battled through three days of singles qualifying competition to obtain one of just 16 available spots in main draw play. His run was highlighted by an upset over No. 58 Chris Simpson of LSU in the final qualifying match on Wednesday to reach the 64-player bracket.

The Lisbon, Portugal, native – who is ranked No. 89 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) – dropped his first set to No. 26 Austin by a 6-2 score, but battled back to earn a 7-5 second-set victory. Dias ultimately dropped the third and final set to the Commodores’ Austin, 6-1.

The reigning Atlantic 10 Performer and Rookie Performer of the year will now compete in the main draw singles consolation bracket, the winner of which will automatically qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
