TULSA, Okla. – George Washington's men's tennis doubles pair of junior Alexander van Gils and sophomore Ulrik Thomsen split their two matches in the final qualifying round at the ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships at University of Tulsa Wednesday.  The duo is slated to be the No. 1 alternate for Thursday's main doubles draw and will play in the 32-team event if injury prevents another squad from competing.

Thomsen and van Gils opened the day with an 8-6 victory over North Carolina’s Joey Burkhardt and William Parker to advance to the final qualifying round of doubles play. Burkhardt entered the match ranked No. 75 in the ITA's preseason singles poll.

“Ulrik and Alex have been playing their best doubles to date,” said head coach Greg Munoz. “They have an unconventional style of play and that’s the key to their success.”

The pair went on to face Oklahoma’s No. 1 doubles team of Costin Paval – ranked No. 17 in the ITA preseason poll – and Dane Webb - rated the nation's ninth-best newcomer by the ITA. Thomsen and van Gils battled the Sooners' pair to the wire, but ultimately dropped a back-and-forth match, 9-8 (5), in a tiebreaker.

“We have never faced such a powerhouse, top-10 team,” said Coach Munoz. “Ulrik and Alex frustrated the Oklahoma team and really disrupted their rhythm. They didn’t expect such force from this GW pair.”

The Colonials will learn if they will continue play at the prestigious tournament Thursday.  The event is made up of over 300 of the top Division I players in the nation. Live stats and video can be followed via the Tournament Central Page.
