Freshmen Get Footing in Fall Tournament Play for Men's Tennis

NORFOLK, VA - Freshmen duo of Ken Mkrtchian and Garrett Lockhart pounded their opponents in the first tournament for Lockhart of the fall George Washington men's tennis season over the Oct. 2-4 weekend at Old Dominion's Collegiate Invitational. Mkrtchian and Lockhart fell in the finals 8-5 on Friday, but powered through the earlier rounds beating their opponents by a combined 24-14. The pair of Richard Blumenfeld and Yan Levinski lost 9-7 in the opening round of their double's flight, but bounced back to win the consolation side of the bracket. In singles action, junior Erik Hannah and Blumenfeld both won their opening matches on Saturday. Hannah lost a three-set battle where every set went to tiebreakers. Blumenfeld fell in straight sets in his quarterfinals match. Levinksi, a 2009 first team Atlantic 10 Conference selection, fell in the first round to the eventual champion of the flight but bounced back to swiftly defeat his consolation round match up 8-5. Mkrtchian and Lockhart again powered through their singles matches both making it to the deep into their flights. Mkrtchian swept his flight, winning the finals match, and all of his matches, in straight sets. Lockhart fell in the semi-final round. GW has entered three fall tournaments, and brought home titles from all three. Next week the men's tennis team heads to Navy for an eight flight singles and four flight doubles event against opponents from the host Navy, Georgetown and Maryland.
