NEWPORT NEWS, VA - George Washington University sophomore Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) won five straight matches to win the Flight A Singles bracket this past weekend, Oct. 14-16, at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News, hosted by Old Dominion at the Huntington Park and Center Court Racket Club. For Gencsoy, the singles title is his second of the fall season as he earlier won the Flight A singles crown at the DC Metro Championships last month.
In the opening round, Gencsoy advanced past Geogre Mason's Stephan Dufils by default, then topped Navy's Nate Nelms, 6-1, 7-5 in the Round of 16 to move on. William & Mary's Alex Zuck awaited in the quarterfinals and after dropping the first set 6-1, Gencsoy rallied for a 6-4, 1-0 victory to make it to the semifinals.
In the semis, Gencsoy knocked off Juan Carlo Vazquez from American in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. He followed up that performance in the finals by defeating Hofstra's Nikola Djordjevic in straight sets as well, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to earn his second singles title this fall.
Gencsoy also teamed with classmate Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) in Flight A doubles and following a first-round bye, they defeated Kenneth Brown and Faron Carter from Howard, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Gencsoy and Salyer were knocked off by William & Mary's Dominic Pagan and Matt Rubenstein, 8-3, who went on to win the bracket.
The Colonials are back on the courts when they travel to Hanover, NH, for the ITA Northeast Championships, Oct. 20-25, hosted by Dartmouth.
