Jopling, Treadgold Lead Men's Tennis at Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - George Washington University seniors Jake Jopling (Wexford, PA) and Matt Treadgold (Glenmont, NY) teamed together to win the top draw in doubles competition, while junior Will Timmons (Greenville, SC) won four straight matches to win Flight C in singles play to highlight action for the Colonials over the weekend at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News, Oct. 15-17.
In Flight C singles play, Timmons had a bye in the first round, before taking out John Mook of Christopher Newport, 6-1, 6-1. Following a 7-5, 6-2 win over American's Andrew Singer, Timmons advanced to the final with a straight set 6-4, 6-4 victory over Alex James of Navy in the semifinals. In the finals, Timmons topped JMU's Jesse Tarr, who earlier defeated freshman Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-3 for the title.
Sophomore Gordon Daniels (Hilton Head, SC) put together a nice run in Flight D-1 singles as he advanced to the semifinals, but dropped a tough three-set match to eventual flight winner Philip Wayne of Delaware, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0.
Jopling and Treadgold opened play in Flight A doubles with an 8-4 victory over Fernando Ferreira and Mike Keller of UMBC. An 8-6 win over Norfolk State's Milan Juricka and Jakub Novak put the senior duo in the semifinals, where they topped Joao Sacomandi and Fernando Uehara of Hampton, 9-8(3). In the final, Jopling and Treadgold recorded their most convincing victory, downing Colin O'Brien and Matt Rubenstein of William & Mary, 8-3.
GW returns to the court when it travels to Blacksburg, VA, for the ITA Northest Regional Championships, Oct. 21-26, hosted by Virginia Tech.
