Dias, Svensson Move on in Doubles, O'Connor Advances in Singles
Oct. 18, 2013
BLACKSBURG, Va. – George Washington men’s tennis won both its singles and doubles matches on Friday to advance to Day 2 of the 2013 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
“We had a solid day going 2-for-2,” said Head Coach Greg Munoz. “Francisco played great in doubles as he was serving and returning better than ever. Viktor has been working really hard and his efforts have paid off. In singles, Daniel showed a lot of maturity after he dropped a few match points and regrouped to finish strong and win the match.”
Dias and Svensson kicked off the day with an 8-3 win over Old Dominion’s Jonas Kuwert and Zvonimir Podvinski and will face Hicham Belkssir and Kristian Marquart of Temple on Saturday. In Round 1 of singles, O’Connor defeated Old Dominion’s Jonas Kuwert in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (3). He will face his first nationally ranked opponent of his collegiate career on Saturday as he matches up against No. 117 Justin Shane of Virginia.
Action at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships continues on Saturday with doubles beginning at 9 a.m. followed by singles matches in the afternoon.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region includes schools located in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. GW is joined by 21 other schools in Bucknell, Delaware, Duquesne, George Mason, Georgetown, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, St. Joseph's, Temple, UMBC, VCU, Virginia and host Virginia Tech. The tournament is a single-elimination format and winners of the singles and doubles flights will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championship in November.
