CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Washington men’s tennis team completed Day 2 of the 2012 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Cavaliers’ Snyder Tennis Center and the Boars Head Sports Club.

Junior Nikita Fomin advanced to the round of 16 of the singles main draw, while he and doubles partner freshman Danil Zelenkov and the duo of senior Alexander van Gils and junior Ulrik Thomsen advanced to the round of 16 of the doubles draw.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region includes schools located in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The tournament is a single-elimination format and winners of the singles and doubles flights will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championship in November.

Thomsen opened the day with a three-set victory over Atlantic 10 newcomer VCU’s Jaime Vazquez by scores of 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. He then fell to the No. 2 ranked player in the country and the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Jarmere Jenkins of UVA, 6-0, 6-3.

Fomin, who is seeded 10th, earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Penn State’s CJ Griffin in the round of 32, then downed Shea Thomas of Liberty, 6-2, 7-5. Fomin will rematch with the No. 52 player in the nation and the tournament’s No. 4 seed Alexis Huegas of VCU in the round of 16 at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Fomin upset Huegas in the Orange Singles quarterfinal match at the UVA Ranked +1 Invitational earlier this fall.

Zelenkov – the No. 15 seed in the tournament – defeated Liberty’s Jore Azuero, 7-5, 6-1, in the round of 32. He then fell to William & Mary’s Ben Guthrie, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) in the round of 16. Van Gils dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Virginia’s Harrison Richmond in the round of 32.

After receiving a bye through Round 1, the fifth-seeded doubles pair of van Gils and Thomsen downed local rivals Dan Khanin and Shane Korber of Georgetown, 8-4. The duo will face Virginia Tech’s Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini in the round of 16 at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Fomin and Zelenkov teamed up to take down Eric and Evan Ward of Morgan State, 8-2, and will play Ryan Pool and Robert Stirling of James Madison at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the round of 16.
