CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Washington men’s tennis tandem of junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov fell in the doubles semifinal match of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Cavaliers’ Snyder Tennis Center and the Boars Head Sports Club.

After earning their way to the quarterfinal match, Fomin and Zelenkov upset the tournament’s No. 3 seed and the No. 28 team in the nation in Russell Bader and Roman Trkulja of Penn State, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals.  The pair’s championship run was halted by the tournament’s second seed and nationally ranked No. 47 team of Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3, in a best-of three match.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region includes schools located in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. The tournament is a single-elimination format and winners of the singles and doubles flights will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championship in November.

The Colonials return to Charlottesville on Friday, Oct. 26, for their final tournament of the 2012 fall season in the USTA Challenger.
