Dias, Jackson Named Recipients of Academic Momentum Award
GW Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Improvement
Jan. 30, 2014
Presented by Scholar Baller in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), the award is based on student-athletes’ academic improvement and the impact each student-athlete’s academic performance has had on his or her classmates, teammates, academic advisors and professors. Dias and Jackson are two of just 40 male and female student-athletes across the nation to receive this honor.
A business administration major and junior standout on the men’s tennis team, Dias is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection. During his first season with the Colonials he became the first-ever A-10 men’s tennis student-athlete to earn the conference’s Most Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer distinctions. The Lisbon, Portugal, product owns an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region singles ranking of No. 14 and is currently 1-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles this spring.
“Francisco's transition as an international freshman student-athlete challenged him to use his determination and work ethic both on and off the court. It is a tribute to Francisco that he embraced that challenge and has continued to attain academic success,” said Associate Athletics Director for Educational Support Services Karen Ercole. “The Academic Momentum Award intends to recognize individuals who exhibit that resiliency and motivation, making Francisco an ideal candidate. We congratulate him on this honor and look forward to following his future accomplishments both in the classroom and on the court.”
Jackson graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in sport, event and hospitality management. She is currently enrolled in grad school at GW and is pursuing a master's degree in leadership development. A Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Third Team selection, Jackson is averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 assists per game this season, ranking third in the Atlantic 10 in helpers.
“From her first few semesters at GW to now, Danni has made incredible progress in her studies. She made a real commitment early on to dedicate herself to her academics and has improved her academic standing consistently each semester,” Academic Support Assistant Sarah-Jo Lawrence said. “Danni should be extremely proud of herself for earning this award. I'm elated she's being recognized for her hard work and am confident she'll continue to challenge herself to reach her fullest potential here at GW and in all her future endeavors.”
